About the Institute of Sociology
The Institute of Sociology, University of Wroclaw, was founded in 1988. It is the oldest research and educational centre in Wrocław offering BA and MA programmes in sociology based on highly qualified staff. The Institute of Sociology employs 51 academic teachers, including 21 assistant professors with habilitation, associate professors and full professors. The Institute cooperates with a range of national and international academic partners.
Our academic staff takes part in local, national and international research projects in the fields of the sociology of education, the sociology of dispositional groups (uniformed forces), the sociology of science, knowledge and culture, the sociology of civilisations, urban and rural sociology, general sociology, the sociology of gender and family, the sociology of borderlands, the sociology of consumer behaviours, applied sociology and social work and the sociology of the public sphere.
The Institute of Sociology is regularly visited by prominent Polish and international sociologists, for example:
- Prof. Michael Burawoy, one of the most influential sociologists and former president of the International Sociological Association and American Sociological Association.
- Prof. Guy Standing, world-renowned economist and social researcher, author of The Precariat: A New Dangerous Class, and A Precariat Charter: From Denizens to Citizens.
